Discussing ‘The New Feminism’ at Pages of Hackney this Thursday

Just a quick note to say that this Thursday (the 23rd) Pages of Hackney will be hosting two fabulous feminist authors, Catherine Redfern and Kat Banyard, to discuss ‘The New Feminism’. Touching on issues covered within their books (Reclaiming The F Word and The Equality Illusion, respectively) the duo will assert that feminism is alive and well, and as vital today as it ever was.

Entrance is just £3, but these events tend to be well-attended, so RSVP to David at info@pagesofhackney.co.uk to ensure your place. The event begins at 7 – all details here!

School’s In For Summer!

With the summer finally making itself apparent, the thoughts of many are turning to sun, sea and sand… but for others it’s the perfect opportunity to geek out about all things feminist! UK Feminista’s Summer School is a free, two day London event incorporating discussions and workshops that will invigorate and inspire all those striving for a more gender equal world.

With speakers including Pragna Patel of Southall Black Sisters, Jess McCabe of the F Word and journalists Kira Cochrane and Hannah Pool, the line-up looks top-notch and the workshops and seminars are in much needed areas, such as ‘Why climate change is a feminist issue’, ‘Men and masculinity’ and ‘Promoting diversity within feminist groups’.

So, whilst you are planning your summer get-aways, make sure you devote the weekend of July 31st – August 1st to re-educating and re-connecting with your feminism.

UK Feminista launches on Saturday!

I can’t fully express how VERY excited I am about the upcoming launch of the pioneering new website/online community/organisation UK Feminista! The site is not even officially launched yet, and already it looks fantastic and is brimming with useful feminist news and resources.

Co-founded by Kat Banyard, author of the recently published Equality Illusion, UK Feminista will support and promote grassroots feminist activism; ‘enabling everyone to get involved in the campaign to end sexism’.

There’s plenty of talk about the strengthening of the UK feminist movement right now (thanks, BBC4’s Women series!) and UK Feminista looks set to be the perfect tool to give the women’s movement a little extra muscle. Members will be able to share their words of wisdom, flag up exciting events and worthy campaigns, and discover new feminist happenings. There’s plenty of potential, and I can’t wait to see it in action!

My wait won’t be too long, either, as UK Feminista will launch this Saturday (the 27th) with an event at The Women’s Library from 11am to 3pm. Speakers will include Hannah Pool of the Guardian, Darinka Aleksic from Abortion Rights, Frances Carlisle from the Latin American Women’s Rights Service and Katie McGrainer of Birmingham Fems. Find out more here and RSVP to kat@ukfeminist.org.uk. Looking forward to it!
